Water Damage Claims: Records and Questions to Prepare

Illustration asking whether home insurance covers water damage

Water damage claims can involve photos, repair records and questions about the source of a leak. Your insurer decides coverage under your policy. First, report the loss promptly through its claims process. Then ask which documents and next steps it requires for your situation.

Gather records for water damage claims

Take clear photos of affected rooms and belongings when it is safe to do so. Also write down when you noticed the water and any steps taken to stop it. Keep plumbing invoices, cleanup estimates and receipts together. Never enter a flooded room just to collect evidence.

Ask before making assumptions

A policy may treat different water sources differently. Therefore, ask your insurer about the cause of loss, deductible, required documents and approval process. Restoration Plumber cannot promise that work will be covered. If urgent action is needed, explain the circumstances and keep a record of the advice you receive.

Keep the water damage claim scope clear

A useful estimate separates the affected rooms, proposed tasks and materials. For example, water removal, drying and repairs are different parts of the work. Ask how changes will be recorded if more damage becomes visible. Keep copies of revised scopes as well as the original.

Plan cleanup alongside the claim

Read Ontario’s flood recovery guidance before returning to a damaged property. Our water damage restoration service explains cleanup and drying. For water damage claims records relating to proposed work, call 416-989-5859 and describe the loss.
